Main Purpose of Role:

The Operations Engineer is responsible for supporting all aspects of operation, maintenance and engineering activities at Midelec Power Plant. The role requires a suitable level of engineering and technical knowledge with the aim of providing safe and reliable operation of plant and equipment to meet the Client’s operational and commercial requirements.

The Shift Operation Engineer has the following roles and responsibilities.

  • Monitoring and control of all plant and equipment on a continuous basis.
  • Responding to alarms by taking appropriate the actions in a timely manner.
  • Execute plant shutdown and start-up procedures as required within the allocated timeframe.
  • Follow processes and procedures to enable efficient plant operation, including utilisation of technical documentation and drawings.
  • Ensure that the plant meets its generating requirements whilst operating in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Supporting the Plant Management team in the implementation and management of initiatives such as Asset Management, Risk Based Culture and Change Management at site.
  • Supporting the development and execution of operational associated KPIs, strategic and business objectives.
  • Support and assist with the production of and continuous development of operational excellence strategies and concepts to ensure alignment with Siemens Energy and the client’s business objectives.
  • Utilize computerized Plant Management System WebBFS for Shift Log, Fault Notification, Work Order and Work Plan Module, Parts Requisition.
  • First line fault finding and maintenance activities on shift-by-shift basis.
  • Support of Maintenance Department activities when required.
  • Executing the PH, Conductivity measurements & hydrazine measurement and dosing
  • Undertake technical training courses and qualifications as required with the aim of continued personal development.
  • To work within the guidelines of the company’s IBMS and quality systems.
  • Development and implementation of safe systems of work whilst carrying out the duties of an Authorised Person under the Midelec Power Plant Safety Rules.
  • Support Root Cause Analysis and Failure Mode Effects Analysis processes into site occurrences and incidents as required.
  • Deputise for the Operation Shift Charge Engineer as and when required.
  • Support and assist the Department and Station Management team in other activities as and when required.


Skills and Competencies:

  • Sound practical engineering and technical knowledge including applying principles, techniques, processes and procedures to achieve the safe operation and maintenance of the power station.
  • Carrying out the duties of an Authorised Person under the Midelec Power Plant safety rules.
  • Knowledge of the T3000 logic-based control system and its operation.
  • Log keeping and report writing as per daily shift requirements.
  • Power Generation / Heavy Industry operational and / or maintenance experience.
  • Awareness and understanding of Health and Safety practices.
  • Self-motivated with ability to effectively prioritize workload.
  • Advanced Problem-solving skills
  • Good oral, written and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently record and report plant relevant and critical information and statuses.
  • Proficient in the development of Method Statements and Risk Assessments.


Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications:

  • Preferably educated to minimum level of HNC / ONC or equivalent level of qualification in engineering.
  • Preferably completed a recognized indentured apprenticeship in engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years operational experience, preferably within the Power Generation section.
  • Appreciation of H&S management processes.
