Role Purpose

Reporting to the Tax & Strategy Manager, this role provides first-line advice, support, and training, implementing Information Security Governance & Risk Management (IGRM) agreed strategy to address key risk areas.

The role is also intended to help coordinate country returns and other information assurance activities, and report to the regional leadership team and IGRM to support the region’s management /Asset Managers/SROs of their information security risks.

Main Accountabilities

Consultancy, analysis & problem-solving

  • Applies core technical/professional knowledge, recognised best practice approaches and insight to resolve GIS/Digital and IGRM issues which arise in the provision of functional support to a specific organisational unit or area of corporate activity.
  • Identifies focal points within relevant SBU’s and local offices.
  • Provides consultancy advice to colleagues to enable their compliance with the global GIS/Digital and IGRM policy framework.
  • Presents complex information clearly, tailoring the presentation of findings to meet the differing needs of both technical and non-technical audiences appropriately, as required.

Service improvement

  • Monitors regulations on information management and data protection.
  • Makes technical/professional recommendations to resolve specific or localised issues but also offers ideas which contribute to the development of wider solutions to broader business challenges and problems.
  • Explains to customers and colleagues the need for compliance with the global GIS/Digital and IGRM policy framework. Collates compliance data within standard monitoring and reporting systems such as Information Assurance Light (IAL) and Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs).
  • Provides assurance for compliance with GIS and IGRM policy to Asset Managers / SROs in the respective business areas
  • Coordinates returns and other information assurance activities, and reports to the regional leadership team and IGRM to support the region’s management of its information security risks
  • Provides first-line advice, support, and training. Helping to ensure DPIAs are completed and supporting them to address risks identified.
  • Supports implementation of corporate or regional change projects within their area of functional expertise (activities could include: providing technical guidance to less experienced colleagues on new systems/procedures/ways of working; delivering staff training and familiarisation activities; participation in project steering or practice groups etc.)

Functional expertise

  • Provides proactive, proportionate professional advice and support to internal customers to ensure local or unit-specific business practices know how to comply with GIS/Digital and IGRM policies.
  • Completes an annual cycle of formally recognised Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to maintain and deepen their professional expertise.
  • Uses a variety of information resources and professional networks to maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in external policy, practice and regulation within their professional discipline.
  • Leads on designing, developing and supporting SharePoint, MS Teams and MS 365 Group sites and will provide guidance and good practice to facilitate virtual collaborative working and best use of MS 365.
  • Liaises with the Global Information Services (GIS) / Digital and IGRM teams to agree and manage appropriate file plans for offices and SharePoint sites
  • Helps offices ensure that SharePoint access controls are appropriately managed, and ensures information on the various sites is being managed correctly and regularly reviewed. This includes changes in premises or presence and changes in operating models.

Relationship & stakeholder management

  • Develops good working relationships with appropriate colleagues throughout the British Council and in the relevant functional discipline to know who to engage with to enable effective implementation of procedural changes and improvements.

Leadership & management

  • Implements Information Security Governance & Risk Management (IGRM) agreed strategy to address key risk areas.
  • Plans and prioritises own work activities to ensure effective delivery of diverse responsibilities and internal customer deliverables over a monthly to quarterly time horizon.
  • Shares intelligence and ideas to support senior managers in identifying/developing new ways in which GIS collaboration tools and IGRM standards could positively impact upon the British Council’s operational efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance.

Minimum/essential Requirements-

  • Graduate degree in Business, Computer Science, Information Management related subject or equivalent experience.

Desirable Requirements-

  • Recognised Certified International Privacy Professional qualification awarded by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
  • Archives and Records Association (ARA) approved records management course.
  • A confident IT user with good knowledge of SharePoint, MS Teams, Groups and M365 applications
  • Good understanding of how to apply M365 applications to business scenarios
